The Poor House Cemetery
Disappearing with the Poor House Farm buildings around 1918 was the Poor House cemetery. Where this cemetery was located is not known except that, to avoid contaminating wells, it would not have been immediagely adjacent to the house. How many are buried in this cemetery is not known, either, nor what conditions, exactly put a person in the Poor House as opposed to consecrated ground. One of the following list is a child, illegitimate. Another is corpse found on the beach at the lighthouse. There was a story of the existence of a black cemetery but this author has found no reference to a such a place, nor can he conceive how such a place could have been permitted. The black population of St. Andrews belonged pretty much exclusively to the Anglican Church and we have many records of their burials there. Very likely this is a distorted memory of the Poor House cemetery. The Poor House cemetery did not distinquish between black and white in its inmates nor in its burials. Poor House staff were also employed in the burial of its inmates in the Anglican burial grounds. •
